AAMS Announces 2009 International Competition

The 2009 Woodwind, Piano, String, and Voice International Competition will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009. The competition will be held at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church, located at 7611 Clarendon Road, Bethesda, MD 20814.  The church is one block from the corner of Wilson Lane and Old Georgetown Road.  For directions click here. Information on our 2008 competition can be found here.  The 2009 competition is our seventh annual competition.

The Asian American Music Society's International Competition is a unique competition for Elementary, Middle and High School Students and is open to everyone, not only Asians or Americans. There are three divisions based on grade. Participants are encouraged to perform works by Asian composers. First place winners will receive a small scholarship and participate in a concert at the Kennedy Center on their Millennium Stage.  This concert will be held in November, 2009.

There are three competition divisions:

The Peewee Division is for elementary school students, grades one through five. The Peewee Division is for woodwinds, piano, and string instruments. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than five minutes.

The Junior Division is for middle school students, grades six through eight. The Junior Division is for woodwinds, piano, and string instruments. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than eight minutes.

The Senior Division is for high school students, grades nine through twelve. The Senior Division is for woodwinds, piano, string instruments, and voice. The Senior Division is the only division with a voice category. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than ten minutes.

The Winner's Concert will be held in November 2009 at the Kennedy Center, Millennium Stage. The application deadline is October 10, 2009. The application package consists of a short biography, two (2) current school or passport photos, a $40 non-refundable application fee payable to "AAMS," and a complete application form. Audition times will be assigned upon receipt of all application materials.
